The Wines of the Week

Anthony Gismondi's five alternative Malaysia white wine this week cross California, Italy and beyond.
A rough choice followed by a light spawns this delightful brilliant white wine with a little tinge of green in the colour. Flowery ginger notes, yellow apple mixture and fresh quince with orange flower and creamy honey on a palate that is soft. Some heat on the finish, but large enough to fit a variety of foods including fish stews that are clams, crab and soft textured medium strength cheeses. Great value.
The Avant fruit comes off of comparatively cool Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino County sites but still keeps its mature California K.J. styling. The strike is similar with more tropical fruit, lime rind and enough acidity to make sure it stays interesting.

Crios Malbec by Susana Balbo Dominio de Plata Mendoza, 2014, Argentina

The 2014 is a 95/5/combination of Malbec grown Bonarda and in an average of 1140m above sea level. the Uco Valley at Meaty pizzas, hamburgers chicken, or broiled steak work here. The wine stays the same high quality although it is iconic red label with all the hand outline has vanished. Great value.

Cost: $17.79

Score: 89/100

UPC: 8033011200376

A savoury, red-fruited nose, springs from 12 to 34-year old bush vines growing a bit more than a kilometre from the ocean. The strike is fresh, smooth and refined with perfect acidity with meaty, cherry, resin, licorice and dried herb flavours. The finish is fresh and succulent. Finest with a favourite pork dish or some lamb stew.

Concha y Toro Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvignon Chile, 2014, Puente Alto, Valle del Maipo

Cost: $20.99

UPC: 07804320333175

Among the better Marques de Casa Concha Cabernets the 2014 combination is 92/6/1/ 1 Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot, all . The end result is delightful. The mid-palate is fresh with savoury, java black fruit, cassis, meaty flavours all in equilibrium. Game or steak dishes are the match here.

$17.49 | 88/100

UPC: 778856114058

The mixture is combination of Chasselas/Pinot Blanc/Pinot Gris as well as the nose is a fresh orchard fruit event with touches of wet rocks, red apples, pears and much more grapefruit. Notable for the cost.

$69.99 | 91/100

UPC: 8000174002468

Subtle sea salt, dried florals, dried cherries and an undercurrent of leather support this savoury Barolo. Pitch that was subtle, wild herbs enter one, on a giant, juicy palate in youth with its business, structured tannins. Drink with roasted leg of lamb, but you'll be rewarded in the basement on this with time. The Mirafiore Barolo is assembled within the commune of Serralunga d'Alba from an assortment of Nebbiolo wineries. The wine spends 24 months in big and moderate sized oak barrels and gets along long maceration.
